What's The Main Line?

The Main Line is a group of suburbs in the Philadelphia metro area located west of the city in Montgomery, Delaware, and Chester Counties. These suburbs are called the Main Line because they sprang up along the route of the historic Pennsylvania Railroad, which connected the towns. Residents of Main Line towns live a very high quality of life, as these are some of the wealthiest communities in the country. Many of the sprawling mansions and large homes that historically characterized the Main Line region still exist today, and are a lovely part of the Main Line landscape.

Brief History Of The Main Line

In the late 1800’s, well-to-do Philadelphians (as well as railroad executives) began to move out of the city looking for less populated, cooler locations to vacation or call home. As the Main Line Railroad continued its gradual construction out into the Philadelphia metro area, settlements began to grow along the route of the railroad. The Main Line communities were settled in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. The Main Line Railroad continued its progress over the following years reaching Harrisburg and Pittsburgh, and eventually Chicago. The railroad is still in service today. The SEPTA R5 regional rail line provides service that connects the Main Line communities with Philadelphia. Amtrak still provides service on these lines and freight trains still use the rails, as well. Historically the Main Line Railroad stopped in the communities of Merion, Narberth, Wynnewood, Ardmore, Haverford, Bryn Mawr, Rosemont, Villanova, Radnor, St. Davids, Wayne, Strafford, Devon, Berwyn, Daylesford, and Paoli. Route 30 (Lancaster Pike) later became popular with automobile traffic through the area and became known as “The Main Line”. Most recently, The Blue Route (Route 476) has become a major thoroughfare for the Main Line communities.
